About the INRL

Our laboratory is a central hub for resources related to neuropathology research and education and serves as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) NeuroBioBank site. We provide collaborators with access to donated human brain tissue, as well as the services needed to stain and analyze the tissue to answer their questions regarding diseases affecting the brain and spinal cord. We also offer consultations on projects requiring neuropathology expertise.

Donor Information

Brain donation is an extraordinary gift that allows researchers to better understand the ways in which diseases develop and confirm important findings discovered in other model systems.

As long as you are an active patient of a doctor at the University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC), we can accept your brain donation free of charge.

UI brain bank secures NIH NeuroBioBank contract

Since 2013, the NIH NeuroBioBank (NBB) has catalyzed scientific discovery through the centralization of resources aimed at the collection and distribution of human post-mortem brain tissue to understand conditions of the nervous system. The NBB network distributes samples to the research community studying neurological, developmental, and psychiatric disorders. Now, the Carver College of Medicine’s brain bank, called the Iowa Neuropathology Resource Laboratory (INRL), is part of the NBB network.

INRL presents at the 2025 Society for Neuroscience Conference

The Iowa Neuropathology Resource Lab was proud to present work from our collaboration with the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner and the Iowa Donor Network at the annual Society for Neuroscience (SfN) conference, held November 15–19 in San Diego, CA.

UI brain bank team contributes to CTE study

University of Iowa Health Care’s rare “brain bank” has contributed to a new study published in Nature that shows that repetitive head impact (RHI)-related brain injuries result in brain cell loss, inflammation, and vascular damage in young, former contact sport athletes. Importantly, many of these detrimental changes were seen in young athletes before the onset of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition that leads to problems with thinking and emotional regulation. The study was led by researchers from Boston University (BU) Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

Acknowledgments

The INRL would like to thank and recognize the generosity of our donors and their families, as this research is only possible due to their support and willingness to donate. We also wish to thank the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, and the Williams-Cannon Foundation for their generous financial endorsement. The INRL is part of the Department of Pathology, whose support is essential for our operation.
